Xanadu Wines is located in SW Australia, just a few miles from the gorgeous Margaret River coastline. The winery was originally founded by Dr John Lagan, who was so taken by his new and beautiful, idyllic home, that he decided to name it after Samuel Tyler Coleridge's vision of utopia in the poem Kubla Khan. The original 40 acre vineyard was planted in 1977, and some of the original vines still exist. Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon were the first varieties grown, but today there quite a few others planted as well. The Rathbone family purchased the property in 2005, and since then have modernized the tasting room and winery, added two other vineyard sites, and have started farming sustainably, obtaining their certification in 2011.
Xanadu's Chardonnay was barrel fermented, but malolactic fermentation was avoided to preserve freshness. While it did see a small amount of new oak, the wine's minerality, bright acidity, and fresh fruit notes allow the oak to play a supporting role rather than being overpowering.
