How to Choose A Wine Gift That Will Leave a Lasting Impression

Holiday shopping can often feel daunting, especially when it comes to selecting the perfect bottle—however, choosing your next wine gift may actually be less stressful than you think. This holiday season, let our seasoned team members make your gifting a little bit easier; simply follow the five expert-approved steps below to be on your way to an unforgettable gift that promises to leave a lasting impression.

Know A Bit About Your Recipient’s Preferences

Hugo Arias Sanchez, Lead Sommelier and Brand Ambassador at Sommsation, states that when possible, the best way to make a lasting impression with your wine gift is to know a little bit about the preferences of your recipient—then use that information as a jumping board to find something exciting. “By knowing a bit about what they like, you can then find something different with a few similarities, that way the gift isn’t completely out of left field,” he says.

Victoria Love, Sommelier at Sommsation, agrees. “When you want to give a wine gift that truly sticks with someone, start by thinking about their taste; whether they’re into bold reds, refreshing whites, or something a little adventurous,” she says. Equally, Love notes that a beautiful gift box or thoughtfully-paired wine duo can make the gift feel more intentional and curated—and above all, don’t forget to make it personal! “Include a quick note about why you chose the wine; this turns a great bottle into a personal experience,” she says.

Consider the Details

Building on the above idea, Love equally notes that some of the most memorable wine gifts are bottles people haven’t heard of yet but instantly fall in love with, such as a standout Zinfandel from a small vineyard, an elegant Cabernet Franc from an under-the-radar producer, or a beautifully textured Syrah from a boutique winemaker. “I also love to go a little extra wild and choose unique Italian varieties like Erbaluce, as these hidden gems create a real wow factor because they feel like a discovery,” she says, citing unique flavors, compelling stories, and the excitement of trying something new as three factors that will set your wine gift apart. “It’s the perfect mix of surprise and craftsmanship,” she says.

Remember, Great Wine Doesn’t Need to Break the Bank!

Arias and Love both agree that thoughtful wine gifts do not require spending a huge sum of money. “Price is not always a good indicator of quality, as there are amazing wines at low prices and also amazing wines at high prices,” Arias Sanchez says. Love agrees, noting that memorable wine gifts are ultimately more about thoughtfulness than price. “A well-chosen $30–$50 bottle from a boutique producer can feel just as special as a high-end collectible, especially when it’s paired with a personal note or presented beautifully,” she says.

Moreover, Love notes that many mid-priced wines come from small wineries that pour their heart into every vintage, and that authenticity often resonates more than the price tag. “At the same time, choose the gift based on the person,” she says. “If they like collecting wines from noteworthy producers, then that's a great gift for that particular person.” Arias Sanchez concurs, stating that gifting and taste are all relative, and that market price is certainly not a solid indicator of preference and quality.

Don’t Forget the Add-Ons

Beyond the bottles themselves, Love reveals that adding a few extra touches can instantly take your wine gift to the next level. “Include a card with tasting notes, pair the wine with artisan chocolates or gourmet snacks, or add a stylish wine key or aerator,” she recommends. Equally, Love notes that custom gift boxes, personalized tags, and pairing suggestions (think tags that say ‘open this with your next pasta night’) also make the gift feel tailored and complete. “Little details go a long way in turning a bottle into an experience,” she affirms.

When In Doubt, Choose Experience

Above all, Arias Sanchez notes that you can’t go wrong with gifting a memorable experience. “Sometimes an experience is even better than an object!” he exclaims, noting that wine tasting gifts—both virtual or in-person—or sommelier consultations gifts can be even more interactive, and can also double as a special add-on to a wine present. “For example, if you purchase a couple of bottles of wine and also get them a sommelier to guide them through the tasting, that will enhance the experience a lot more,” he says—and at the end of the day, don’t be afraid to take to the pros. “If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed when putting a wine gift together, simply ask for some help! Our team of sommeliers is always ready to assist,” he says.
