The Story

Joan and Dave Szkutak purchased SAMsARA Wine Co. in 2017, inspired by their love of site-driven wines and a deep connection to Santa Barbara County. After traveling through many of the world's great wine regions, they were continually drawn back by the area's diversity of vineyards, coastal beauty, and welcoming wine community. As vintners, Joan and Dave work closely with winemaker Matt Brady, supporting his creative vision both in the vineyard and the cellar. With tasting rooms in Los Olivos and Goleta, SAMsARA invites guests to explore expressive, small-lot wines crafted with balance, energy, and authenticity.

The Values

At SAMsARA Wine Co., sustainability, authenticity, and environmental stewardship guide every decision. The team believes great wine starts in the vineyard, selecting special blocks where soils, slopes, and elevations bring out the best in the fruit. Committed to minimal intervention and 100% sustainably farmed grapes (a goal achieved in 2023), SAMsARA pairs thoughtful vineyard work with native yeast fermentation and restrained use of oak. The winery and tasting rooms run on 100% solar power, and new California-made, lightweight bottles further reduce the carbon footprint—reflecting a deep respect for land, craft, and future generations.
From the winery
Rooted in the Sanskrit concept of Samsara—the endless cycle of life, renewal, and interconnectedness—we believe great wine is born from intention, patience, and a deep respect for nature's rhythm.
